■ Tell us about your background and your entrepreneurial journey into Eye Level.
I was a personal financial consultant with Prudential since 2005. In 2013/2014, I joined Eye Level as a tutor in Taman Meranti Jaya, Puchong. Never in my mind have I thought I could become a teacher and the very reason is because of my son. I wanted to enrol him in Eye Level math program at age four but he refused and I decided to join as a tutor to learn and teach him by myself.
■ What inspired you to venture into the education sector?
After two years of teaching, I found that I love to deal with kids. I wanted to provide a place where kids feel secure, comfortable to be themselves and enjoy learning. Eye Level’s philosophy matched what I was looking for. Hence, I decided to join Eye Level. Of course this is only the first step for me to provide a secure and comfortable environment for the kids who need a place to learn at their own pace, and most importantly being respected, in being themselves.
■ What are your criteria to choose the right Franchisor?
The subject’s curriculum is important as well as the support from the management team. To have a two-way communication between Franchisor and franchisee is essential because it creates synergy, and a win (franchisor) win (franchisee) win (kids) situation.
■ How has franchising helped you grow your business?
With the established brand name of Eye Level in Malaysia, it is easy for us to do marketing and parents have more confidence in us and on Eye Level’s structured program. As franchisees, we can capitalise on the strength of the system where we are able to have better focus to do our best in managing our centers and the students. It helps us to avoid making unnecessarily mistakes when venturing into business since we get advice directly from Eye Level headquarters, as well as precious sharing of experience from other franchisees. I decided to take up Eye Level franchise system because of its Math program which is systematic and structured that really benefits the kids, and even myself as an adult.
■ What lessons did you learn about running a successful franchise?
First, one must have a vision and run the business with a mission and passion. Sincerity is the foundation for the success of Eye Level franchise business.
■ To stay ahead of growing competition, what strategy does Eye Level follow?
There is simply no competition when it comes to the quality of instruction and curriculum that you find at Eye Level. We are the only center worldwide that offers critical thinking as part of our math program. Furthermore, our curriculum has been developed in a way that allows children to make progress and proceed through levels. All concepts and skills in the Eye Level program are interrelated.
Mastery of basic foundational skills is necessary before advancing to more complex skills, resulting in improvement of a child’s accuracy and speed when completing more complex questions. This eventually leads our students to be critical thinkers, problem solvers and self-directed learners.
■ What kind of training and business support does Eye Level provide to franchisees?
Trainings are in the form of programme/curriculum training, Study Achievement Rate (SAR), Standard Completion Time (SCT), repetition of concept, which help us understand and monitor students’ progress; lead us to be able to nurture students closer to the programme’s ultimate goal – to develop real critical thinkers, problem solvers and lifelong learners. Eye Level area manager and area trainer work closely with us and update us with latest information from headquarters. In addition, we are also advised on how to manage center expenses, maximise our earnings so that we can grow better.
■ Where would you like to see your Eye Level franchise business in five years’ time?
I would like to see my Eye Level center with 300 subjects count. Each student count stay with us at least five years and more. Enrolment is important, but student sustainability is the essential in nurturing students.
