Selina Gan, the founder and Managing Director of Country Farm Organics (CFO), has always had a passion for healthy living. After graduating with a Masters degree in Real Estate Development and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration, both from the University of Southern California, USA, Selina started an organic business in 1998.

At that time, she focused only on the wholesale business but later on, she realised even after she lowered her wholesale prices, most of her dealers were not passing on the discounts to their customers. Hence, she decided to move into the retail business herself and in 2004, she launched her first retail outlet.

Today, there are 3 Country Farm Organics owned retail outlets altogether, with over 70 experienced and dedicated employees promoting healthy lifestyle through organic food and saving our fragile environment. To satisfy its customers’ various needs, Country Farm Organics run its business based on 3 different concepts. One of them is by establishing retail outlets, which offer its customers a trendy place to purchase organic products and enjoy great food in a social environment. These outlets carry a larger scope of fresh and processed organic food products, supplements, body care, household and even organic soft toys sourced from all over the world. To help customers understand the organic products that they are purchasing, qualified nutritionists or well-trained shop assistants are at hand in the retail outlets to offer free and friendly advice.

Attached to some of these retail outlets is a Country Farm Organics restaurant cum café that serves wholesome organic food.     Organic Industry Knowledge (Q&A)
    1. What is organic food?
    Organic food is food prepared and processed without using any chemicals, that is,
    organic food production does not involve the use of chemical fertilizers, chemical
    pesticides, chemical preservatives.
    The USDA categories Organic food products into:
    • 100% organic: Must contain 100 percent organically produced ingredients.
    • Organic: Must contain at least 95% organic ingredients.
    • Made of organic ingredients: Must contain at least 70% organic ingredients.
    • Have some organic ingredients: May contain less than 70% organic
    ingredients.

    2. What is organic farming?
    Organic farming is the form of agriculture that relies on techniques such as crop
    rotation, green manure, compost and biological pest control to maintain soil
    productivity and control pests on farm. Organic farming excludes or strictly limits the
    use of manufactured fertiliser, pesticides (which include herbicides, insecticides and
    fungicides), plant growth regulators such as hormones, livestock antibiotics, food
    additives, and genetically modified organisms.
    The land that wish to plant organic plants should be absolutely free from all traces
    of chemicals. To allow the land time to recover from the abuse of these harmful
    products like chemicals and pesticides we should uproot any chemically treated
    plants. Then will need to leave the land alone for about 2 to 4 years.
    3. Why does organic food cost more?
    Organic food production is generally labour intentsive and involves usage of organic
    fertilizers and organic pesticides which are expensive than chemical fertilizers and
    pesticides. Hence organic food costs more. 5
    4. What is the benefit of organic food?
    Food manufacturers often inject the foods they sell with chemicals in order to
    prolong their ‘shelf life’ and keep them looking fresh and tasty. Farmers also inject
    hormones into their crops in order to boost the volume of their crops. In other
    words, eating these types of produce might not be as healthy as organic food.
    If our body take too much of additives, preservatives, chemicals, and toxins then
    they cannot be properly disposed of. The result of this is that these toxins, poisons,
    and fats are stored in our body until our body unable to getting rid of them. These
    deposits throughout our body can lead to a lot of health problem such as, heart,
    liver, hormone imbalanced. By eating organic food exclusively we can seriously
    limit the number of toxins being introduced to our body, which will ease the burden
    on overworked our internal systems which will lead to health problem!
    5. How to identify organic product?
    Organic food can be identified with the help of an organic logo on the packet.

    a certifying body of their region, can put a logo of that certifying body on their food
    items
